Crystal Lake, IL – May 28, 2024 – In March, a devastating fire destroyed Last Chance House, a non-profit organization established in 2005 that provides short-term housing for men seeking recovery from alcoholism. Miraculously, all eight residents inside at the time of the fire escaped without injury, just before the roof collapsed.
In response to this event, The Community Foundation for McHenry County provided $15,000 in emergency funding to the New Directions Sober Living Program. Amy Hernon, Executive Director of The Community Foundation for McHenry County, stated, “The Community Foundation was eager to help the displaced residents from Last Chance House find new accommodations. Partnering with New Directions was a natural fit. Supporting McHenry County residents in their time of need is a core part of our work at The Community Foundation.”
The emergency funds enabled the displaced residents to move into new housing provided by New Directions. New Directions staff ensured that residents received clothing and other essentials lost in the fire. Bobby Gattone, Executive Director of New Directions, highlighted, “Our program offers high-quality living environments for individuals in early recovery. We provide transportation to recovery groups, living essentials, and case management to support each individual’s journey.”
The collaboration between The Community Foundation for McHenry County and New Directions ensured that the residents affected by the fire received immediate and comprehensive assistance. Gattone further commented, “We are doing everything possible to ensure the residents have a solid foundation for lasting recovery.”
