Kate Wade, Board Member, The Community Foundation for McHenry County
What do you believe in?
That’s not just a rhetorical question, it’s something I’ve found myself reflecting on and something I challenge you to think about. In times of uncertainty, when it feels like challenges are growing faster than solutions, we’re often called back to our values. What matters most to us? And how are we showing up for it?
At The Community Foundation for McHenry County, I’ve had the privilege of serving as a Board Member alongside people who believe in the power of local action. Real, lasting change doesn’t always come from Washington DC or Springfield; it starts here, with us. It starts in our neighborhoods, in our schools, and in our nonprofit organizations. When we come together to meet local needs, we strengthen the entire community.
That’s exactly what the Women’s Fund at the Community Foundation is designed to do. Established with a long-term vision, the fund is committed to supporting women and girls in McHenry County. It’s not just a grant-making effort; it’s a promise to invest in the well-being and potential of our community through philanthropic support.
Why focus on women and girls? Because when they have access to opportunity and resources, the benefits ripple outward. Families become stronger. Neighborhoods become more connected. Communities grow more resilient. Yet, historically, less than 2% of philanthropic dollars nationwide are directed toward women and girls. We believe it’s time to change that, together.
And here’s the truth: this work only moves forward with community involvement.
You don’t need to be a major donor to make a difference. You just need to believe in something and take action, whatever that looks like for you. Whether it’s making a contribution, sharing the mission with others, volunteering your time, or simply listening and learning, it all matters. It all adds up. I get involved and support this work, because I believe in it.
So, I’ll ask again: What do you believe in?
