At the Community Foundation for McHenry County, we spend a lot of time talking with individuals and families who want to be more intentional about their giving, but aren’t quite sure what that looks like yet. A question we hear often is: Is a donor advised fund (DAF) right for me?
A donor advised fund is a charitable giving fund that allows you to contribute cash, appreciated stock, or other assets, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then recommend grants to the nonprofits and causes you care about over time. Those funds are invested and grow tax-free.
What that really means in practice is this: you don’t have to align every charitable decision with a moment in time. You can give when it makes sense for you financially, and then be thoughtful about where and how you give over time.
In my experience, that shift is powerful. A donor-advised fund creates space for more intentional philanthropy creating more meaningful impact.
When a DAF Might Be a Good Fit
A DAF is one of the most flexible tools in charitable planning. You might consider one if you:
- Want to simplify your giving while supporting multiple organizations
- Are looking to be more thoughtful and strategic over time
- Want to involve your family in charitable decisions
- Prefer an alternative to the complexity of a private foundation
- Are navigating a high-income year, sale of a business, or other financial event
Why it Matters Where You Give
There are many places you can open a donor advised fund. But where you choose to do that shapes your experience and ultimately, your impact.
At the Community Foundation for McHenry County, we bring a level of local knowledge and connection that you simply won’t find with a national provider. We know this community. We see where the needs are evolving, which organizations are doing strong work, and where philanthropic dollars can truly move the needle.
But just as important, we work alongside you.
This isn’t transactional. We’re here to help you think through your goals, your values, and what you want your giving to accomplish, whether that’s right now or over the long term. For many donors, their fund becomes more than a giving tool it becomes part of how they engage their family, respond to community needs, and define their legacy. It is powerful.
And with that said, a DAF isn’t the only path. Every donor’s situation is different, and there are many ways to give meaningfully. If you’re thinking about your philanthropy, whether you’re ready to start a fund or just exploring options, we would love to connect with you.
